If you are going to be in New York this week, don’t miss Manhattanhenge, the twice-yearly event where the rising/setting sun is aligned with the east–west streets of the main street grid of Manhattan and lights up both sides of the street.
The name was coined by the famed scientist Neil DeGrasse Tyson. Years ago he described the phenomenon as “when the setting Sun aligns precisely with the Manhattan street grid, creating a radiant glow of light across Manhattan’s brick and steel canyons, simultaneously illuminating both the north and south sides of every cross street of the borough’s grid.”
The upcoming sunset alignment happens on Friday and Saturday, July 12-13. The best places for viewing Manhattanhenge are 14th, 23rd, 34th, 42nd, and 57th Streets. Tour New York with Cary and you never know what you’ll learn!
